Puppy Training for an Emotional Support Dog

If you suffer from anxiety, then you may want to think about getting an emotional support dog for yourself. You can get a puppy and raise it to be a great companion that can really help you with regards to your anxiety. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, then you should read this article on how to train a puppy to be your emotional support dog:

Start taking your puppy places with you as soon as it is fully vaccinated

If you follow a normal vaccination schedule for your puppy, then it should be fully vaccinated at around four months of age. After the puppy has been fully vaccinated, it will be safe to take them out in public without worrying about them catching one of the serious illnesses covered by the shots. Take them out with you as often as possible so you can socialize them with people and other dogs. Taking them out a lot will also get them used to riding in the car and being around a lot of different stimuli.

Get them in an obedience class

You want to take your puppy to obedience classes so they can learn regular obedience behavior. This allows you to be able to count on them to behave when they are out in public with you. It also teaches them important things like walking on a leash, listening to important commands like sit and stay, and how to listen to you even when a lot of people and other animals are around.

Don't let them bark at others in public

If your dog barks at people or dogs, then you are going to have a hard time taking them places with you. When you want them to be your emotional support dog, this can be a problem. If you can't break them from barking on your own, then you may want to hire a professional trainer who will go places with the dog to train them not to bark.

Once your dog knows how to behave properly, you can turn to them for affection and stress relief when you are out in public and start to feel an anxiety attack coming on. Having your dog there with you to calm you down can help reduce your chances and the severity of anxiety attacks. Of course, your dog can be just as helpful when the two of you are at home.
